Elementary Workshops

Algebra in Elementary School? You Bet! Grades 1-5 (1 day)

Teachers learn where algebraic reasoning is already imbedded in the current curriculum and how to use higher level questioning techniques to lead students to richer number sense and algebraic thinking. Totally hands-on day during which teachers walk through a generous handout of classroom-ready activities, and walk away feeling “good” about Algebra!

Cutting Up with Fractions Grade PK-2 (1-day)

Ask many adults what part of math gives them the greatest difficulty and they will respond, “FRACTIONS!” Teaching students fractions is a matter up cutting up! Hands-on activities that will insure that your students really understand grade level expectations before they leave you.

Cutting Up with Fractions Grade 3-6

Ask many adults what part of math gives them the greatest difficulty and they will respond, “FRACTIONS!” Teaching students fractions is a matter up cutting up! Hands-on activities that will insure that your students really understand grade level expectations before they leave you

Elementary TEXTEAMS

Created by the State of Texas to promote Standards-based elementary education, all Institutes are hands-on, and range from 2 to 5 days. Our Trainers are Texas Certified by the Charles S. Dana Center.

Achieving Mathematical Literacy, Elementary TEXTEAMS, Grades 1-2 (5 days)

Presents all 5 mathematical strands (number and operation, patterns, geometry, measurement, probability and data analysis) in hands-on format. Handout for the Institute fills a 3-inch binder. Games, literature connections, problem-solving generously sprinkled throughout the entire workshop.

Achieving Mathematical Literacy, Elementary TEXTEAMS, Grades 3-5 (5 days)

Presents all 5 mathematical strands (number and operation, patterns, geometry, measurement, probability and data analysis) in hands-on format. Handout for the Institute fills a 3-inch binder. Games, literature connections, problem-solving generously sprinkled throughout the entire workshop.

Rethinking Elementary Mathematics TEXTEAMS, Part 1 (5 days)

Intense developing of the “big ideas” within the strands of mathematics. Part 1 focuses on Number, Operation and Quantitative Reasoning. Teachers develop tremendous skills in leading students to a thorough understanding of place value, number sense, and operations of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Handout of lesson plans, activities, and how-to pieces fills a 4-inch binder.

Rethinking Elementary Mathematics TEXTEAMS, Part 2 (5 days)

A continuation of Rethinking Elementary Mathematics TEXTEAMS, Part1. Part 2 focuses on the other strands of mathematics: patterns, relationships and algebraic thinking; geometry; measurement; probability and data analysis; and problem solving.

Estimation and Reasonableness, It’s Everywhere! PK – 2 (1 day)

Teaching estimation and reasonableness is an on-going job that begins the first day of school and continues into adulthood. Work through problems that help to develop these important Numeracy skills and learn how to incorporate the need for these skills in your existing classroom assignments.

Estimation and Reasonableness, It’s Everywhere! 3-5 (1 day)

Teaching estimation and reasonableness is an on-going job that begins the first day of school and continues into adulthood. Work through problems that help to develop these important Numeracy skills and learn how to incorporate the need for these skills in your existing classroom assignments.

Manipulatives through the Strands for PK – 5 Teachers! (1 day)

A one-day hands-on workshop which takes standard elementary manipulatives (such as Unifix Cubes, base-ten blocks, 2-sided counters, Geoboards, pattern blocks, Cuisenaire rods, and many others) and develops their uses throughout the strands of mathematics. This one is an excellent way to familiarize your teachers with those manipulatives gathering dust on the shelf. Do you have special needs? We’ll work with you to make certain that what we deliver fits your campus plan.

Origami and a Sense of Geometry 1st -5th Grade Teachers (1 day)

Teachers are quickly realizing the mathematical power of this wonderful Japanese art form. Origami demonstrates patterns and geometrical properties in a soothing presentation. Teachers fold their way through an entire day of Standards-based lesson plans. Materials, 1 resource book, generous handout, list of current websites and fun for everyone!

So What’s the Problem? Problem Solving in the Primary Classroom (K – 2)

Working through problem-solving strategies helps teachers to lead students through the problem solving process. Primary teachers are offered of full day of problem solving activities that span the math strands. Included in the workshop is a grade-level specific Ms. Fritzie Problem Solving book for each teacher and a generous handout of additional problems, strategies and ideas for turning many of their existing activities into meaningful mathematics.

So What’s the Problem? Problem Solving in the Intermediate Classroom (3-6)

Working through problem-solving strategies helps teachers to lead students through the problem solving process. Intermediate teachers are offered of full day of problem solving activities that span the math strands. Included in the workshop is a grade-level specific Ms Problem Solving book for each teacher and a generous handout of additional problems, strategies and ideas for turning many of their existing activities into meaningful mathematics.

Test-Taking Tips 3-6 (1 day)

You’ve taught your students the state expectations through hands-on problem solving experiences. They’ve practiced skills, written journals, collaborated and individualized. What more can you do? Walk through a day of tips for helping students transfer their knowledge of state expectations to the state testing instrument. Optional computer program available with this workshop.

Working through the Strands Series

This series was developed for an Alternative Certification EC-4 program, and focuses on the 6 strands of mathematics:

  • Number, Operation and Quantitative Reasoning (2 days)
  • Patterns and Algebraic Thinking (1 day)
  • Geometry (1 day)
  • Measurement (1 day)
  • Probability and Data Analysis (1 day)
  • Problem Solving (1 day and woven into all other sessions)

All of the Workshops are independent of one another and can be delivered individually or in selected groups. Totally hands-on, Standards based and problem-solving oriented, these workshops help to not only prepare teachers new to the profession, but also provide exciting experiences that any level teacher can take immediately back into the classroom.

Product Workshops

Ms. Fritzie Problem Solving Series

And More…

Math Curriculum Alignments (2 – 4 days)

Expert curriculum leaders guide your math curriculum teams in aligning expectations PK up. Service can be provided to the level of your needs from facilitating to creating the final document.

Training Math Teams*

Let our trainers train your trainers to duplicate the workshops for your District use. All of our in-house created workshops are available to you in this format. Your District Staff is trained in the same hands-on fashion, but are given the nuts and bolts of presenting to others. Add 1 day of training to any workshop for this specialized experience.
