Websites for Math
Welcome back to a fresh new start! New students, maybe a different room, and hopefully a few new activities to spruce up those first few weeks of school!
Just thought that you might want to check out a few websites for the beginning of school. The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives is a fantastic site created by the Utah State University under an NSF grant. Terrific on-line games and activities for your students grades PK 8 broken down by curriculum strands. And the best part is that it’s FREE! Check it out at http://matti.usu.edu/nlvm/nav/ . What a way to practice those skills from previous grades without the ordeal of pencil paper drills. Great tone-setter for the year!
How about starting your year with origami appropriate to your level of students? There are so many online sites. A quick search will bring you pages and pages of addresses. Several that I find very helpful not only in their range of difficulty, but also their simplicity of directions and pictures are:
- Origami Diagrams http://www.paperfolding.com/diagrams/
- David Mitchell’s Origami Heaven http://www.origamiheaven.com
- Wicked for Kids http://www.wicked4kids.com
Peruse the sites, select and fold a few creations, then take the projects to your students. GREAT math is hidden in every project!! For a detail lesson plan and a simple but fun project, check out Barbara Pearl’s Math in Motion site, http://www.mathinmotion.com .
And if you haven’t visited the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics website, you are in for a treat! NCTM has online lesson plans, plans with offline activities, applets for students’ experience. And all standards based, of course! High powered mathematics and high interest for all levels PK 12. www.nctm.org then go to Illuminations.
It’s also time to consider the Staff Development needs for your campus for the 2003-2004 school year. Please check out all of the offerings on our website, www.msfritzie.com. If you don’t see what you want, contact us. We tailor our math workshops to your specific campus/district needs. Contact us soon our calendars are filling up quickly.
Welcome to a year of Vision and Promise!
