Ms. Fritzie Problem Solving Series
Ms. Fritzie is a delightful character who loves mathematics
but seldom checks her work! Sometimes her answer is reasonable;
but most of the time her answer is unreasonable! Students
work with a partner to decide whether Ms. Fritzie’s
answer is reasonable or unreasonable, create a poster using
pictures, numbers, and words, then justify their strategies
in a brief presentation to the class.

There are as many solutions to these Ms. Fritzie problems as there are students in your class; however I know that it always helps to see samples of strategies from real students so that you can have a feel for what to expect in the beginning of your Ms. Fritzie experience.
Following the links at the right, you'll find one sample question and one sample poster for each grade level along with brief descriptions of how the students discussed their work. I've found that primary students like to do their own posters, while intermediate (3rd grade and up) need to work with and respond well to the partner approach. The brief description tells what students were able to discuss in their presentations of the posters once their posters were complete.
CAUTION: These are only sample strategies!! Your students will find many, many ways of proving whether Ms. Fritzie is reasonable or unreasonable!
