Kinder Ms. Fritzie

Kinder students are to make sense out of their world, to see the mathematics all around them, and to be able to begin to talk about the math in informal terms. It is the Kinder teacher’s job to see that there are many experiences for students to grow in these critical areas.

Kinder Sample Question

Students should be in a large circle around the teacher so that all students look into the circle and can see the action as the teacher talks through the story.

Materials:

  • bucket balance (1 for teacher, and 1 for every 3 students)
  • Sets to compare weights: (1 for teacher, and 1 for every 3 students)
  • 1 small rock that weighs LESS than a large bottle of glue
  • 1 large bottle of glue that weighs MORE than a small rock
  • large newsprint or drawing paper/markers or crayons
  • 8.5 x 11 sheets of paper for the students

The Problem:

Place the rock and the glue in opposite buckets on the balance, then say,
"Ms Fritzie says that the rock is heavier than the glue. What do you think? Is she being reasonable or unreasonable? Why do you think that?”

Create a class poster with the students. First draw Ms. Fritzie’s head and ask, "Which does Ms Fritzie think is heavier?” then draw a sketch of the rock.

Ask students what you could draw next to show what you had done with the balance, rock , and glue. Draw what they suggest.

Kinder Sample WorkNow distribute the materials to the students in teams of three. You might want them to be at their work stations for this part. Have them compare their glue and rock, then each student creates a poster to show what they have done.

Student should be able to explain their thinking to you as you walk around the room.

Sample PreK Poster

This student first compared the weight (mass) of a small rock and a bottle of glue, then drew a picture of the comparison. She was able to explain that the glue is heavier than the rock. Ms. Fritzie had stated that the rock was heavier; therefore, Ms. Fritzie's answer is unreasonable.
